Deep breathing is an excellent relaxation technique that can be used as an immediate stress-buster.
When you are feeling stressed, take a few moments to relax your breathing and the rest of your body will follow suit.
1. Sit or lie in a comfortable position, close your eyes and breathe in through your nose, breathing into your belly rather than your chest. Place your hands on your stomach and, as you inhale, allow it to expand as it fills with air. Let it out slowly on the exhalation.
2. Perform each exhalation and inhalation to a count of one. Try to do this for around 10 to 20 minutes, concentrating simply on counting and breathing. After 10 to 20 minutes, allow your breathing to return to its normal rhythm and simply relax with your eyes closed.
3. Open your eyes slowly, look around you and accept what you see. Give your shoulders a shake out or rotate them a few times to ease out any residual tension. Shake out your arms and hands as well.
Stand up, stretch, smile and get on with your day relaxed, refreshed and de-stressed!
